PlanetScale provides cloud-hosted databases built on Vitess and PostgreSQL. Vitess enables horizontal sharding of MySQL databases across thousands of nodes through a shared-nothing architecture. PlanetScale also offers managed PostgreSQL starting at $5 per month, with high-availability clusters, connection pooling, and branching for per-environment deployments. PlanetScale Metal provides NVMe-backed performance with unlimited IOPS. Vitess was originally developed at YouTube to scale MySQL to petabytes of data and now powers databases at Slack, HubSpot, Blizzard, Etsy, GitHub, Block, Bloomberg, and Yelp. PlanetScale offers deployment options including bring-your-own-cloud setups, and is developing Neki, a next-generation PostgreSQL sharding architecture.
